Why Gemlik

Gemlik is a coastal municipality and district situated within the Bursa Province of northwestern Turkey, positioned roughly 29 kilometers from the city of Bursa. The settlement lies on a broad plain at the eastern extremity of the Gulf of Gemlik along the Sea of Marmara. The surrounding terrain is bordered on three sides by mountain ranges, notably the Samanlı Mountains stretching from the southeast to the northwest. The Karsak Stream, which originates from Lake İznik, flows through the plain and bisects the town center before emptying into the gulf. In the surrounding countryside, the landscape is heavily blanketed by olive groves and pine trees.

The region possesses a rich historical background dating back to antiquity, when it was known as the Greek town of Cius, later called Prusias on the Sea after King Prusias I of Bithynia. Mentioned by ancient chroniclers such as Herodotus and Strabo, the city operated as a valuable commercial emporium and a key link along the Silk Road trade route. Over centuries of historical transitions, it became an early Christian bishopric before eventually coming under Ottoman control in the fourteenth century. The town's present name derived from the Ottoman term Gemilik, referencing a local shipyard that once built galleons for the navy.

Gemlik is nationally renowned for its black olives, with local economic activities heavily centered around table olives, olive oil, soap, and food processing. In addition to its agricultural output, the town functions as a major commercial center featuring a busy import harbor, free trade zones, and various industrial facilities concentrated along its western shore. The Gulf of Gemlik itself, historically utilized for ship docking, has developed into a popular destination for coastal tourism.

Travelers seeking seaside relaxation frequently visit the summer resort districts along the northern coast of the gulf. Kumla serves as one of the busiest seasonal resort spots in the Marmara region, attracting many vacationers from nearby Istanbul. Smaller seaside communities such as Büyükkumla, Karacaali, and Narlı offer additional retreat options along the water. Beyond the coast, natural attractions include the Sudüşen waterfall situated north of Haydariye village, while sports enthusiasts gather at Şahintepe in the Samanlı Mountains for motocross competitions. Every year between August and September, the district celebrates its primary harvest with a local Olive Festival.

Gemlik predominantly features a hot-summer Mediterranean climate marked by warm, dry summers and cool, rainy winters, though higher mountain elevations experience an oceanic climate. July stands as the warmest and driest month of the year, whereas December receives the greatest volume of rainfall. Convenient travel access is provided by the state road connecting Yalova and Bursa, which connects to the local Gemlik beltway and leads out toward the northern resort towns.
