Why Ghaziabad
Ghaziabad is a major urban center in western Uttar Pradesh, situated within the Upper Gangetic Plains of northern India as part of the National Capital Region. Frequently called the "Gateway of Uttar Pradesh" due to its position along the primary entry route from neighboring Delhi, the city is divided into two distinct geographical sections by the Hindon River: Trans-Hindon to the west and Cis-Hindon to the east. The city represents the largest municipality in western Uttar Pradesh, with its local administration organized into five primary zones comprising the City, Kavi Nagar, Vijay Nagar, Mohan Nagar, and Vasundhara divisions.
Founded in 1740 by Ghazi-ud-Din II, a wazir in the court of Mughal Emperor Muhammad Shah, the settlement was originally named Ghaziuddinnagar. During the Mughal era, the scenic banks of the Hindon River served as a popular picnic destination for the royal family. The town's name was shortened to Ghaziabad upon the arrival of the railways in 1864. The city gained historical prominence through the establishment of Syed Ahmad Khan's Scientific Society, played a role in the Indian Rebellion of 1857, and later actively participated in the broader independence movement. Formerly part of Meerut district, Ghaziabad was officially established as an independent district in November 1976.
Following Indian independence, Ghaziabad rapidly developed into the second-largest industrial hub in Uttar Pradesh after Kanpur. Early economic expansion was driven by businesses relocating from Rawalpindi and Punjab, leading to prominent manufacturing sectors in coated abrasives, breweries, and oil engines. Later decades saw widespread growth in steel production and electronics, supported by major public enterprises such as Bharat Electronics Limited and Central Electronics Limited. Today, the municipal landscape features extensive residential and commercial districts, including Indirapuram, Vaishali, Kaushambi, and Pratap Vihar.
As a crucial transit hub for Northern India, Ghaziabad is supported by comprehensive rail and road infrastructure. Ghaziabad Junction, operating along the Delhi-Howrah line since 1864, serves as a primary railway hub. Urban travel is facilitated by multiple routes of the Delhi Metro, including the Red Line terminating at Shaheed Sthal, Blue Line stations in Kaushambi and Vaishali, and Pink Line stops in Loni. Regional connectivity is further enhanced by National Highway 24 and the semi-high speed Delhi–Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System, which operates a key priority corridor between Sahibabad and Duhai.
