Why Gurgaon

Gurgaon, officially designated as Gurugram, is a prominent satellite city located in the northern Indian state of Haryana. Positioned along the border with Delhi, it sits approximately 30 kilometres southwest of New Delhi and 268 kilometres south of Chandigarh. Topographically, the city rests at an average elevation of 237 metres above sea level near the Aravalli range and along the Sahibi River basin.

Historically tied to the ancient Kuru kingdom and the Maurya Empire, the area evolved from a small village within the Jharsa region under Mughal and British administration into a modern metropolitan district. Local heritage reflects centuries of history through sites like the 15th-century Sheetla Mata Mandir, the historic Aliwardi mosque, the Badshahpur stepwell, and the British-built Church of the Epiphany constructed in 1925. The city was officially renamed Gurugram in 2016 to recognize its traditional link to the figure Drona.

The city transformed economically beginning in the 1970s with the establishment of a Maruti Suzuki manufacturing facility, followed by General Electric's outsourcing presence in the late 1990s. Today, it serves as a major national center for information technology, corporate management, civil aviation, and medical tourism. Characterized by a skyline featuring over 1,800 high-rise buildings, Gurgaon is divided into 115 sectors and 36 municipal wards, with rapid real estate development extending into nearby areas such as Manesar and Sohna.

Despite dense urbanization, the surrounding region encompasses several ecological sites and wetlands home to migratory bird species, including Sultanpur National Park, Basai wetland, and Damdama Lake, alongside the sacred Mangar Bani forest grove. Within the urban area, public green spaces such as Leisure Valley Park, Tau Devi Lal Biodiversity Botanical Garden, and the Aravali Biodiversity Park provide natural recreational environments.

Visitors can explore local cultural attractions including the Museo Camera photography museum, performance venues like Epicentre and Nautanki Mehal, or participate in leisure activities across nine local golf courses and major venues like Tau Devi Lal Stadium. The city experiences a hot semi-arid climate with four distinct seasons, marked by hot, humid summers and monsoon rainfall between July and September. Travelers should note that the city frequently faces challenges related to elevated air pollution levels and seasonal flooding.
