Why Halmahera Island

Halmahera, previously referred to as Jilolo, Gilolo, or Jailolo, is the largest landmass within Indonesia's Maluku Islands and ranks as the country's seventh-largest island overall. Spanning an area of 17,780 square kilometers, it belongs to the province of North Maluku. The provincial capital, Sofifi, is situated along the island's western shoreline. Halmahera's population, which comprises a roughly equal mix of Muslim and Christian residents, is dispersed across several administrative divisions, including the major regional hub of Tobelo.

The island's landscape is defined by its volcanic geology and position along an island arc. Highly active volcanoes, such as Dukono in the north and Mount Ibu on the northwestern coast, characterize the terrain. Large stretches of the eastern peninsula consist of bedrock formed from ultramafic rocks and ophiolites. Halmahera features significant natural biodiversity, serving as the native habitat for the endemic flightless invisible rail and the unique palm species Jailoloa halmaherensis. The area also historically attracted naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace, who documented the standardwing bird of paradise here.

Historically, Halmahera was home to the Sultanate of Jailolo—one of the region's four traditional kingdoms—as well as the 13th-century Loloda Kingdom in the north. Its historical development was closely connected to the nearby islands of Ternate and Tidore. During World War II, the Japanese military established a naval base on the island at Kao Bay. A memorial in Duma village commemorates a later period of local conflict from 1999 to 2000. Cultural groups on the island include the coastal Tobelo people and the semi-nomadic Togutil people, some of whom live in isolation within Aketajawe-Lolobata National Park.

Travelers reach Halmahera primarily by maritime transport. Main transit routes connect through the nearby island of Ternate, while Tobelo maintains direct cargo and passenger ferry links to major Indonesian cities such as Manado and Surabaya. Economic activity on the island includes large-scale mineral processing, notably centered around the Weda Bay Industrial Park, which operates extensive nickel and cobalt mining facilities across the central and northern districts.
