Why Hargeisa
Hargeisa is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Somaliland, a breakaway state internationally recognized as part of Somalia, where it functions as the regional capital of the Maroodi Jeex region. Situated in a valley within the Galgodon, or Ogo, highlands at an elevation of 1,334 meters (4,377 feet), the city serves as a major regional commercial hub for trading, retail, construction, and precious stone-cutting.
Due to its high altitude, Hargeisa experiences a mild hot semi-arid climate that rarely reaches extreme hot or cold temperatures despite its tropical location. Monthly average temperatures range from 18°C (64.4°F) in December and January to 24°C (75.2°F) in June. The city receives an average of just over 400 millimeters (16 inches) of rain annually, with most precipitation occurring between April and September.
The town initially developed as a trade and watering stop for nomadic pastoralists moving between the coast and the interior. Around 1860, Sheikh Madar established a permanent religious community that introduced sorghum farming, helping transform the location into a settled urban center. Hargeisa officially became the capital of British Somaliland in 1941, replacing Berbera. Following the extensive destruction of up to 90 percent of its buildings during late 20th-century conflicts, the city underwent large-scale reconstruction after 1991, with single-story downtown structures gradually giving way to multi-story high-rises.
On the outskirts of the city lies the Laas Geel complex, a prominent archaeological site featuring exceptionally well-preserved Neolithic rock art inside ten caves. The paintings depict human figures with raised hands alongside long-horned cattle. Within the city itself, institutional sites include the Hargeisa Provincial Museum, established in the post-independence period.
As the administrative center of Somaliland, Hargeisa accommodates the presidential palace, government ministries, and parliament. Municipal governance is organized into sub-districts—including 26 June, Ahmed Dhagah, Gacan Libaax, Ibrahim Kodbuur, and Mohamoud Haibe—which are represented by elected district councils. Travel to and from the area is supported by Hargeisa International Airport.
