Why Haugesund
Haugesund is a coastal town located in Rogaland county along the southwestern shore of Norway. Positioned on the Karmsundet strait, the town sits roughly 60 kilometers north of Stavanger and 120 kilometers south of Bergen. Off the mainland, nearby geographical features such as the island of Karmøy and the Røvær archipelago shelter the area from the open North Sea, providing a calm waterway along the coast. Islands within the strait, including Risøya and Hasseløya, are connected to the city center by bridges, while Vibrandsøya serves primarily as a destination for outdoor recreation.
The region possesses deep historical roots dating back to the Viking Age. Norway's first monarch, King Harald Fairhair, resided close by at Avaldsnes. Following his death around 940, he was reportedly buried at Haraldshaugen near the strait, a burial mound that gave the town its name. To commemorate the thousand-year anniversary of the naval Battle of Hafrsfjord, a national monument was erected at Haraldshaugen in 1872. Originally expanding as a modest village powered by abundant herring fisheries, Haugesund gained official town status during the mid-nineteenth century. Over time, as herring stocks diminished, the local economy shifted focus toward the petroleum industry.
The town center features a distinct street layout. A notable architectural landmark is the pink Haugesund City Hall, completed in 1931 in a neo-classical style designed by Gudolf Blakstad and Herman Munthe-Kaas. The city hall faces a town square and a public park established in 1949. Along the waterfront promenade, visitors can see a statue of Marilyn Monroe crafted by sculptor Nils Aas. Several churches also stand throughout the town, including Vår Frelsers Church and Skåre Church. While shopping complexes have expanded outside the core, the area remains an important commercial hub for the surrounding region.
Haugesund functions as a prominent regional cultural center, hosting several major annual gatherings. Each August, the town hosts Sildajazz, an international traditional jazz festival that brings together dozens of musical groups. Haugesund is also home to the Norwegian International Film Festival, held annually since 1973, which incorporates the presentation of the national Amanda Award for film. Additional cultural activities include the Haugesund Live concert series.
Travelers can reach the area via Haugesund Airport, situated approximately eight kilometers away on Karmøy, which offers regular flights to destinations such as Oslo and Gdańsk. The local bus station at Flotmyr provides long-distance bus routes connecting to Bergen, Stavanger, and Oslo, alongside regional transit options. Passenger and car ferries link the town to surrounding islands including Utsira, Røvær, and Feøy. Haugesund experiences an oceanic climate, characterized by mild summers, rainy autumns and winters, and relatively dry weather between April and July.
