Why Helao Nafidi

Helao Nafidi is an urban area situated in the Ohangwena Region of northern Namibia, positioned along the country's northern boundary with Angola. The town was formed in 2004 by uniting several distinct settlements and villages stretching along the main highway, including Oshikango, Engela, Omafo, Ohangwena, and Onhuno. As of 2023, the municipality was home to 29,119 residents. The population primarily consists of the Kwanyama community, a subgroup of the Ovambo people who reside on both sides of the international border and share a common language.

Geographically, the town is organized into three main urban zones set within a broader agricultural landscape. Oshikango anchors the northern portion of the municipality and is directly bisected by the border, while Omafo and Ohangwena lie to the south. Farmland and smaller settlements occupy the spaces between these urban hubs. The regional landscape reflects a mix of traditional communal farming areas and modern urbanized land.

The history of the area was heavily shaped by the South African Border War between 1966 and 1989. Conflict involving South African forces, UNITA, SWAPO, and Angolan troops left local infrastructure, including the Oshikango border crossing, severely damaged and neglected. Following Namibian independence, multiple settlements were formally designated as villages in 1996 to foster cross-border commerce, eventually leading to their merger into a single municipality.

Today, Helao Nafidi serves as a significant economic and commercial center. The border crossing at Oshikango is the busiest in Namibia, handling an average of 500 crossings daily. Economic facilities include an Export Processing Zone built with European Union assistance featuring 14 warehouses, as well as an annual trade fair and expo hosted in Omafo. The town offers a range of educational options from primary and combined schools to senior secondary institutions and the Ongha Vocational Training Center, and it holds membership in the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities.

Transportation to and within the region centers around the primary road network and ongoing rail developments. Construction of the Northern Railway extension has linked the area to southern points such as Ondangwa and Oshivelo, with rail infrastructure extending toward Ohangwena and Oshikango. Local administrative services include a dedicated traffic center for vehicle registration and licensing.
