Discover the rich, multifaceted history of the House of Peace Synagogue in Columbia, South Carolina. Originally constructed as a house of worship for Orthodox Polish and Russian Jewish immigrants following a 1915 fire, this historic structure stands as a rare local example of Eastern Jewish architecture. After the Beth Shalom Congregation relocated in 1935, the building transformed into the famous Big Apple Club, an influential African-American nightclub. Here, a legendary dance craze known as the Big Apple was popularized, eventually spreading nationwide after University of South Carolina students observed the moves from the balcony and brought them to New York.
Moved nearly two blocks in the early 1980s to its current spot at Hampton and Park Streets, the two-story wooden building was purchased by the Historic Columbia Foundation in 1993. Inside, you can appreciate details like a central recessed dome and a spectator balcony, reflecting its vibrant past as both a historic synagogue and a dance venue.
