Why Ibirité
Located in the central portion of Minas Gerais, Brazil, Ibirité is a municipality situated within the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte. Positioned adjacent to neighboring municipalities such as Contagem, Betim, Brumadinho, and Sarzedo, the city recorded a population of 170,537 during the 2022 census. Its name stems from an indigenous phrase meaning iron land, highlighting the region's mineral heritage.
The settlement began in 1880 as a small village known as Pantano de Vargas within the parish of Sabará. Over the subsequent decades, its administrative jurisdiction transitioned through Sabará, Santa Quitéria, and Betim. Russian educator Helena Antipoff selected the community as the site for her foundational educational works, establishing a lasting local legacy. Ibirité attained municipal independence in December 1962, later establishing judicial district status in 1988.
Geographically, portions of the municipality sit at an altitude of over 800 meters above sea level. Due to dense vegetation around key sites like the Helena Antipoff Foundation, the area experiences a mild local climate. The municipal territory also encompasses part of the 3,941-hectare Serra do Rola-Moça State Park, an environmental parkland set up in 1994 to protect native terrain.
For leisure and outdoor activity, the town features local sports complexes and public spaces. Natural attractions in the surrounding region include several waterfalls located roughly 20 kilometers from the city center in Casa Branca. Educational resources are supported by higher education institutions, including the State University of Minas Gerais as well as facilities for UNOPAR, UNINCOR, and EADCOM.
The local economy incorporates mining, industrial manufacturing, and agricultural activities. Field production includes crops such as tomatoes, maize, onions, sugarcane, cassava, bananas, and beans. Industrial output spans vehicle parts, textiles, furniture, machinery, rubber, and plastics. Key industrial installations feature the gas-powered Ibiritermo thermoelectric plant, inaugurated in 2002, and more than half of Petrobras' Gabriel Passos refinery. Due to its proximity to larger economic centers, many residents commute to work in neighboring Belo Horizonte, Contagem, and Betim.
