Why Isiolo
Isiolo serves as the capital of Isiolo County in Kenya, positioned close to the geographical center of the country, roughly 285 kilometers north of Nairobi. Originally developing around local military encampments, the settlement has grown into an expanding urban center. Most of the local population resides on the outer edges of the town, with demographic growth bolstered by residents relocating from northern regions such as Moyale, Marsabit, and Mandera.
Historically, Isiolo was designated in 1922 as the headquarters for the Northern Frontier Districts under the British East Africa Protectorate, maintaining its administrative role through various ordinances until regional reorganization occurred upon national independence in 1963. Today, the small city features a diverse cultural makeup, housing communities such as the Borana, Ameru, Somali, Turkana, Samburu, and Rendille, alongside Indian shopkeepers. The population is divided roughly equally between Christian and Muslim faiths, a heritage represented by prominent landmarks including the Jamia mosque and the twin bell towers of the Catholic church.
Visitors to Isiolo can experience its prominent central market, which supports a local manufacturing sector known for crafting jewelry out of brass, copper, and aluminum. The town also serves as an access point for surrounding natural attractions and wildlife destinations. The Samburu, Buffalo Springs, and Shaba national reserves are situated to the north, while the Lewa Downs Reserve is located to the south within Meru County.
Isiolo has a warm climate, featuring shaded, tree-lined avenues across town. From June through August, the area encounters strong dry winds and elevated dust levels. Geographically situated along the A2 Highway—a section of the Cairo-Cape Town route—Isiolo functions as a critical transport crossroad leading north toward Marsabit and the Ethiopian border. Freight and passenger traffic stopping in town help support the local lodging industry. Additionally, the area is reached via Isiolo Airport, an upgraded international airfield designed to support regional tourism and trade.
