Why Itoshima

Situated at the northwestern edge of Fukuoka Prefecture in Japan, Itoshima occupies a coastal and mountainous position on the Itoshima Peninsula. It shares an eastern border with Fukuoka City, while its southern and southwestern reaches are marked by the Sefuri Mountains and border Saga Prefecture, including Karatsu City and Saga City. To the north and west, the city looks out over the waters of the Genkai Sea. Locally, the economy centers on agriculture, commercial fishing, and tourism, alongside an industrial park, with a growing segment of the workforce commuting to neighboring Fukuoka.

Human activity in the area dates back thousands of years. Archaeological discoveries include Jomon period remains at the Shimmachi stone burial mound cluster, while the Yayoi period saw the region governed by the ancient state of Itokoku. Thanks to its position along the Tsushima Current, the territory historically served as a gateway for technological innovations and maintained extensive maritime exchanges with distant regions such as Okinawa. Following centuries as part of the Fukuoka Domain during the Edo period, the modern municipality took shape through the progressive consolidation of numerous smaller towns and villages.

Visitors are drawn to Itoshima for its scenic shoreline, sandy beaches, and outdoor recreation. The coastal waters and surrounding landscape provide popular conditions for surfing and hiking, while the area also hosts the annual Sunset Live summer music festival. For those interested in heritage, the area features several National Historic Sites. Notable locations include ancient burial mounds such as the Ikisan Chōshizuka Kofun, the Shinmachi and Shito dolmen clusters, the ruins of Ito Castle, and the historic Raizan Kōgoishi structure.

Itoshima features a humid subtropical climate characterized by mild overall temperatures, warm August summers, and cool January winters, with peak rainfall occurring during July. Travel to and around the area is supported by public transit and major roadways. Railway access is provided by JR Kyushu's Chikuhi Line, which services multiple local stations including Chikuzen-Maebaru and Hatae. Drivers can reach the region via National Route 202 or the Nishi-Kyūshū Expressway.
