Why Jabalpur
Jabalpur is the fourth largest city by area in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, situated along the Narmada River. It serves as an important administrative hub, functioning as the headquarters for both Jabalpur district and division, as well as the judicial capital of Madhya Pradesh where the state High Court is located. In addition to hosting the West Central Railway headquarters, the city is historically recognized as the place where the game of snooker originated.
The surrounding geography is famous for the Marble Rocks at Bhedaghat, an eight-kilometer gorge sculpted from pure marble by the Narmada River as it plunges down the Dhuandhar Falls. Jabalpur also holds significant paleontological interest, being the location of Asia's first recorded dinosaur fossil discovery near Bara Simla Hill in 1828. Subsequent excavations in the region revealed fossilized dinosaur eggshells along with remains of species such as Titanosaurus and Rajasaurus.
The city has a deep history spanning multiple eras. Ancient Ashokan relics found at Rupnath indicate early Mauryan presence, followed by rule under the Satavahana, Gupta, and Kalachuri dynasties, the latter contributing to the founding of the Chausath Yogini Temple. During the era of the Gond kings, defensive structures such as the Madan Mahal hilltop fort were erected, and extensive water conservation efforts led to the creation of over 85 local ponds. Following periods of Maratha control, Jabalpur was incorporated into British rule—when it was spelled Jubbulpore—leading to the establishment of a large military cantonment and colonial architecture. The city also featured in India's independence movement, notably hosting the 1939 Tripuri Congress session along the Narmada at Tilwaraghat.
Jabalpur experiences a humid subtropical climate typical of north-central India. Summers begin in late March and extend through June, with May bringing average temperatures exceeding 40 °C (104 °F). The southwest monsoon arrives soon after, supplying the bulk of the region's rainfall between July and early October. Winter settles in by late November and continues until early March, with January marking the coldest month at an average daily temperature of around 15 °C (59 °F).
