Jewel Changi Airport is a nature-themed retail and entertainment complex situated in Changi, at the eastern tip of Singapore, about 20 kilometers northeast of the Downtown Core. Integrated with Terminals 1, 2, and 3 of Changi Airport, the ten-story building encompasses 135,700 square meters distributed across five above-ground levels and five basement floors. Designed to blend urban parkland with commercial spaces, it attracts millions of visitors annually, including air travelers and local residents.
The complex was first proposed in 2013 by then-Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to preserve the airport's position as an aviation hub and expand passenger capacity. Constructed on the site of a former open-air car park in front of Terminal 1, the S$1.7 billion project was developed through a joint venture between Changi Airport Group and CapitaLand. The facility soft-opened in early 2019 before its official inauguration in October 2019, successfully enlarging Terminal 1's arrival hall and baggage handling areas.
At the heart of Jewel's toroidal glass-and-steel dome lies the Rain Vortex, recognized as the world's tallest indoor waterfall. Cascading 40 meters down from an oculus in the roof, recirculating rainwater flows into a basement pool before transforming into a 360-degree light and sound display at night. Encircling the cascade is the Forest Valley, a five-storey indoor plant sanctuary hosting roughly 3,000 trees and 60,000 shrubs representing global high-altitude tropical ecosystems.
The top level is home to the 14,000-square-meter Canopy Park, which features themed gardens such as the Topiary Walk and Petal Garden alongside recreational installations. Visitors can explore suspended Bouncing and Walking Nets, navigate Singapore's largest Hedge Maze or a glass Mirror Maze, step onto the glass-floored Mastercard Canopy Bridge, or slide down the Discovery Slides. The level also includes Foggy Bowls, where mist creates a cloud-like atmosphere. Elsewhere in the building, the Changi Experience Studio presents interactive exhibits detailing the airport's operations.
Beyond its natural and leisure highlights, Jewel houses around 300 retail and dining establishments, an IMAX cinema, a supermarket, early baggage check-in facilities, a transport lounge, and a 130-room Yotel hotel. Transit passengers traveling between airside terminals can view the interior and waterfall from the elevated Changi Airport Skytrain.
