Located at 340 Guerra Junqueiro Street in Porto's Lordelo do Ouro e Massarelos parish, the Kadoorie Mekor Haim Synagogue is an Orthodox Jewish temple and the largest synagogue in the Iberian Peninsula. Translating to 'source of life' in Hebrew, its foundation dates to 1923 under the initiative of Captain Artur Barros Basto. Completed in 1938 with key financial support from the Kadoorie family and London's Jewish community, this historic sanctuary served as a haven for hundreds of refugees fleeing to the United States during World War II.
When you visit, you will encounter striking Art Deco architecture designed by Artur de Almeida Júnior and Augusto dos Santos Malta, with collaboration from interior designer Rogério de Azevedo. Step inside to explore a grand rectangular celebration hall beneath a domed ceiling, framed by an upper-level balcony. The interior highlights beautiful woodwork, Hebrew Torah passages, and Moroccan-Sephardic decorative details.
Opened to the public in 2012, the site now features the Jewish Museum of Porto, dedicated to education and history. Today, it serves an active, diverse community of about 500 members from over thirty countries.
