Why Kalimpong
Kalimpong is a town and district headquarters located in the Indian state of West Bengal, operating under the semi-autonomous Gorkhaland Territorial Administration. Resting at an average elevation of 1,250 meters, the town occupies a ridge between Deolo Hill and Durpin Hill, overlooking the Teesta River valley below. The surrounding landscape features steep hillsides with views extending to snow-clad Himalayan ranges, including Mount Kanchenjunga.
Originally ruled by the Sikkimese and Bhutanese kingdoms and inhabited by indigenous Lepcha and Limbu peoples alongside migrant Bhutia and Kirati communities, the territory was ceded to the British East India Company following the 1865 Treaty of Sinchula. The British developed the hamlet into a temperate hill station to escape summer heat, utilizing its position near high mountain passes to establish a thriving trade route with Tibet for wool, furs, and grains. In 1959, following political shifts in Tibet, many Buddhist monks settled in Kalimpong, bringing rare scriptures that are today preserved in local monasteries such as Zang Dhok Palri Phodang.
Education and horticulture are central to the local character and economy. Colonial-era educational institutions, including the Scottish University Mission Institution and Dr. Graham's Homes, continue to attract students from across India and neighboring nations such as Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Thailand. Kalimpong is also widely recognized for its agricultural exports, including ginger, tea, gladioli, and indigenous orchids, with numerous nurseries exporting Himalayan flower bulbs, tubers, and rhizomes. Local markets further trade in regional crafts, wood carvings, copper ware, Tibetan jewelry, cheese, and noodles.
Visitors to Kalimpong can explore a variety of cultural and natural sites across the town. Atop Deolo Hill, the highest elevation in the municipality at 1,704 meters, stands the Kalimpong Science Centre, which promotes scientific awareness. Historic landmarks include Bhutan House, an administrative and cultural seat assigned to the Bhutanese Dorji family. The town's elevated setting also offers access to flower markets, Buddhist monasteries housing historical artifacts, and vistas across the surrounding valleys.
Kalimpong experiences a temperate, monsoon-influenced subtropical highland climate marked by five distinct seasons and an average annual temperature of 18 °C. Mild summers are followed by severe monsoon rains from June through September, which frequently bring heavy fog and landslides to the region, while winter temperatures average around 8 °C. The town is reached by road via National Highway 10 and NH-717A, linking it to Siliguri, Gangtok, and nearby mountain settlements. Aerial access is provided by Pakyong Airport and Bagdogra International Airport, while major regional railway connections operate out of Siliguri Junction and New Jalpaiguri Junction.
