Why Kampala

Kampala is the capital and largest urban center in Uganda. Functioning as the country's primary economic hub, the city proper is divided into five distinct administrative zones: Kampala Central, Kawempe, Makindye, Nakawa, and Rubaga. The broader metropolitan area expands across several neighboring districts, reaching south to the edges of Lake Victoria.

Geographically, Kampala is defined by a landscape of elevated terrain punctuated by valleys that contain sluggish rivers and wetland swamps. The elevation within the city ranges from 1,135 meters along the shores of Lake Victoria to its highest point at the peak of Kololo Hill, which reaches 1,311 meters. Although urban development has spread across a wider territory over time, the settlement was historically founded upon seven prominent hills.

Historically, the region formed the center of the Buganda Kingdom, whose sovereign rulers frequently moved their royal capital between different summits. The modern name originated from a local translation describing the area as the "Hill of the Impala," referring to the antelopes that populated Old Kampala Hill when it functioned as a royal hunting reserve. In the late nineteenth century, British authorities constructed Fort Lugard on Old Kampala Hill, establishing an administrative post around which the municipality began to grow.

Many of the original hills host major civic, historic, and religious landmarks. Mengo Hill served as the royal seat of the Buganda Kingdom, while Nakasero Hill became an administrative and commercial focal point following the establishment of Fort Nakasero. Religious heritage is prominent across several heights, including Kibuli Hill with its major mosque, alongside Namirembe Hill and Lubaga Hill, which feature historic Anglican and Catholic cathedrals.

Kampala contains several of the country's oldest educational and medical institutions. Namirembe Hill is home to Mengo Hospital, the initial Western-style medical facility in the area, as well as Mengo Senior School. Mulago Hill serves as the location for Mulago Hospital, the national referral institution, while Makerere Hill hosts Makerere University, which was established in 1922. The city was connected to regional maritime trade via the Uganda Railway to Mombasa in 1931 and officially attained city status while becoming Uganda's national capital upon independence in 1962.
