Why Kananga
Kananga, historically known as Luluabourg, serves as a major urban hub and the capital of Kasai-Central Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Ranking as the nation's fourth most populous city, this primary commercial and administrative center is situated in the country's interior along the Lulua River, a key tributary of the Kasai River.
The city's origins trace back to a station established on the left bank of the Lulua by German explorer Hermann Wissmann. Named Malandji after an Angolan city suggested by his porters, the settlement later relocated across the river following the construction of the railway, taking the name Luluabourg after the local train station. The original settlement site remains known as Malandji-Makulu. In 1966, the municipality was renamed Kananga during a national initiative to replace European place names. The name derives from a Tshiluba word meaning a place of peace or love, honoring an ancient location where pre-colonial chiefs convened to resolve disputes and forge treaties.
Due to its central position, delegates at the 1960 Belgo-Congolese Round Table Conference selected Luluabourg to become the new national capital instead of Kinshasa, though political complications ultimately halted the relocation. The city nevertheless held a prominent civic role, serving as the site where the Democratic Republic of the Congo's first locally authored constitution was drafted in 1964. Locally, the area is also called Kananga-Malandji wa Nshinga, referencing the high-voltage electrical cables overhead that form part of the Inga-Shaba power system connecting the Inga Dam to Kolwezi.
Visitors to the city can explore a regional museum as well as the Cathedral of Saint Andrew, recognized as the largest Eastern Orthodox church in Africa. The region is accessible via Kananga Airport and lies along the Ilebo-Lubumbashi railway route. Kananga experiences a tropical savanna climate, featuring an extended rainy period from September to May and a distinct dry season during June and July.
