When you visit Kigali, step back into the country's colonial past at the Kandt House Museum, located westbound in the Nyarugenge District. Formerly known as the Natural History Museum, this site holds profound significance as the chosen capital of German colonial rule in Rwanda, established in 1907 by German Administrator Richard Kandt. The building itself is a unique piece of heritage: constructed in 1908 by Rwandans under Kandt's direction alongside colonial military leaders, it stands today as the only remaining historical building from that inaugural year.

After undergoing renovation in 2004 to showcase the nation's rich natural resources, the site officially took on the name Kandt House Museum in December 2017. As you explore the exhibits managed by the Rwanda Cultural Heritage Academy, you will discover fascinating displays detailing the history of Rwanda both before and during German colonization. In addition to these compelling historical insights, you can observe a vibrant exhibition of live reptiles native to the Rwandan countryside.

Here, you will encounter impressive species including Nile crocodiles alongside various snakes such as pythons, cobras, and the formidable black mamba. It offers you a rare, immersive look into both local history and regional wildlife.
