Why Khartoum

Khartoum is the capital and largest city of Sudan, forming the core of the country's primary metropolitan area. Situated at an elevation of 385 meters, the city is defined by the meeting point of the White Nile, which flows north from Lake Victoria, and the Blue Nile, which flows west from Lake Tana in Ethiopia. This landmark river intersection is known as al-Mogran or al-Muqran. The waterways divide the region into a tripartite metropolis consisting of Khartoum proper, Khartoum North, and Omdurman, all connected by a series of bridges.

The origin of the city's name is associated with several linguistic traditions, ranging from Dinka and Beja words meaning a meeting place of rivers to Arabic terms describing a narrow strip of land or safflower plants. Established in 1821 by Isma'il Kamil Pasha near the ancient site of Soba, Khartoum initially served as a military outpost before becoming the colonial capital in 1823. After being largely destroyed during the late 19th-century Mahdist War, it was rebuilt under British administration starting in 1898 with a street plan modeled on the Union Jack. The architecture incorporated Victorian designs with Middle Eastern influences and Mediterranean-style balconies.

Today, the metropolitan area is home to notable cultural and educational institutions, including the National Museum of Sudan, the Khalifa House Museum, the University of Khartoum, and the Sudan University of Science and Technology. Khartoum serves as a major trade center connected by rail to El Obeid and Port Sudan. Air travel is supported by Khartoum International Airport, with the New Khartoum International Airport under construction. Other local points of interest include the historical ruins of the al-Shifa factory in Khartoum North.

Khartoum experiences a hot desert climate with an exceptionally long dry season and an average annual rainfall of approximately 121 millimeters. The year is marked by a cooler dry period from November to February, followed by extremely hot conditions from March to May, when daily high temperatures regularly exceed 40 degrees Celsius. The city receives a brief rainy season centered around August, driven by shifting wind regimes, before dry continental trade winds return to sweep across the region.
