Why Kielce
Kielce is a city located in south-central Poland, serving as the administrative capital of the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship. Situated along the banks of the Silnica River, it lies in the middle of the Świętokrzyskie Mountains, also referred to as the Holy Cross Mountains, within the northern portion of the historic region of Lesser Poland. In 2021, the city recorded a population of 192,468 inhabitants.
The area boasts a long history, with human habitation recorded as far back as the fifth century BC by Celts and later by the Vistulans. The settlement grew into a regular trading market for hunters in the early middle ages and came under the authority of the Bishops of Kraków, eventually receiving city rights by 1295. Local origins are tied to various traditions, including a famous legend involving Prince Mieszko II Lambert and a vision of Saint Adalbert by the Silnica River, though linguists often trace the name to an Old Polish word for sprouting wetland vegetation. Over the centuries, rich regional deposits of limestone, copper, lead, iron, and uranium established the city as an important metallurgical and industrial hub. During the nineteenth century, it became the focal point of the Old-Polish Industrial Zone and briefly hosted the nation's first technical university.
Architecture and nature form a significant part of the visitor experience in Kielce. Notable historic structures include a stone church erected in 1171 by Bishop Gedeon Gryf and a Mannerist palace constructed between 1637 and 1642 under Bishop Jakub Zadzik. The palace stands out for its French Renaissance architectural influence and is a rare surviving example of a magnate manor from the Vasa dynasty period. The city is surrounded by abundant green spaces, providing easy access to outdoor recreation and the natural scenery of Świętokrzyski National Park.
In modern times, Kielce is recognized for hosting a variety of trade fairs and exhibitions throughout the year. The city is well known domestically for producing Kielecki Mayonnaise, a popular regional condiment. In the athletic sphere, Kielce is home to Iskra Kielce, a top-level handball club that has earned multiple Polish championship titles and a victory in the EHF Champions League.
