Why Kirkuk

Kirkuk is a major city in northern Iraq that serves as the administrative capital of the Kirkuk Governorate. Situated along the Khasa River, the modern urban center rests upon the elevated ruins of the historical Kirkuk Citadel. The city's geography places it near prominent surrounding features, including the site of Baba Gurgur, located roughly four and a half kilometers away.

The region boasts an extensive historical lineage dating back thousands of years. Archaeological discoveries in the area include pottery shards from the Ubaid period excavated from local mounds, alongside broader regional ties to early human activity at Shanidar Cave. Anciently known as Arrapha, the settlement once served as the capital of the Guti kingdom and developed into a prominent city within the Assyrian Empire. Over the centuries, rule over the region shifted through the Seleucid, Parthian, and Sassanid empires, later passing through Islamic caliphates, local Kurdish emirates, Seljuk Turks, Mongols, and the Ottoman Empire.

Throughout its long history, Kirkuk has been identified by various names reflecting its cultural shifts. It was called Karka d-Bet Slokh during the Seleucid era, Beth Garmai—often translated as the house of bones—in Eastern Aramaic sources, and Garmakan, meaning the land of warmth, during the Parthian and Sassanid periods. Following the seventh century, historical writers frequently used the name Kirkheni to refer to the city and its fortress.

Kirkuk is defined by a diverse population that includes Kurds, Iraqi Turkmens, Arabs, and Assyrian Christians. The area also holds a rich Christian heritage linked to the Assyrian Church of the East during antiquity. Modern administrative structures in the city have reflected this heritage through local governance councils that incorporate representation from each major ethnic group as well as independent social figures, including teachers, lawyers, and artists.
