Why Kisangani

Kisangani, formerly known as Stanleyville, serves as the capital of Tshopo Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Situated in the eastern central Congo Basin within an equatorial forest plain, the city is located just 80 kilometers north of the equator. Covering an area of 1,910 square kilometers, it stands as the largest urban center in the country's tropical woodlands and represents the fifth-most populous urban area in the nation. It is bordered by Banalia Territory to the north, Bafwasende to the east, Ubundu Territory to the south, and the territories of Opala and Isangi to the west.

Positioned approximately 2,100 kilometers upstream from the mouth of the Congo River, Kisangani marks the furthest point accessible by navigable river transport. This strategic placement along the waterway has made the city the most significant inland port in the country after Kinshasa. It functions as a primary commercial hub for regional land and river transit, serving as a major marketing and distribution center for the northeastern section of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Administratively, the city is split into six communes, with Kabondo, Kisangani, Makiso, Mangobo, and Tshopo located on the river's right bank, and Lubunga situated on the left bank.

The area was originally inhabited by the Wagenya people, who established a local economy centered around fishing at Boyoma Falls, historically referred to as Stanley Falls. The Wagenya caught substantial quantities of fish using traditional methods and maintained trade networks extending to smoked fish, canoes, nets, pottery, and metalwork crafted by specialized local artisans. European settlement began in 1883 when Henry Morton Stanley established a trading post on the Island of Wana Rusari along the Lualaba River. The local Swahili name Kisangani, which translates to City on the Island, was used alongside the colonial name Stanleyville until the city was officially renamed Kisangani in 1966.

A prominent physical feature of the region is Boyoma Falls, a series of seven cataracts stretching across 100 kilometers between Kisangani and Ubundu that historically restricted upstream river travel. In the early 20th century, the construction of a rail line connecting Stanleyville to Ponthierville helped overcome these natural transit barriers and accelerated urban growth. Having historically served as the capital of Orientale Province, Kisangani became the capital of Tshopo Province following administrative restructuring in 2015.
