Why Kiskunfélegyháza

Kiskunfélegyháza is a historic city situated in Bács-Kiskun County, Hungary. Located roughly 130 kilometers southeast of Budapest, it lies in the central portion of the Great Hungarian Plain. The surrounding countryside is defined by an agricultural landscape filled with cornfields, tobacco plantations, orchards, and vineyards. Its Hungarian name translates to "half church," while its prefix denotes its placement within the historical Kiskunság, or Little Cumania, region.

The area has a long history of human habitation, evidenced by ancient Roman urns and relics excavated nearby. Hungarian tribes arrived during the 9th century and established settlements by the 10th century. Following the destructive Mongol invasions of 1241–1242, which left the land deserted, King Béla IV invited Cuman settlers to repopulate the area, where they eventually adopted Christianity and the local language. First recorded under the name Feledház in 1389, the settlement was later destroyed by Ottoman forces in 1526. It remained uninhabited until Catholic Hungarian settlers from Jászfényszaru and Üllés reestablished the community in 1743. The settlement grew in importance when Queen Maria Theresa relocated the district courts and prisons there in 1753, subsequently granting it official town privileges in 1774.

Over the centuries, the city has been associated with several notable Hungarian figures. It is recognized as the birthplace or home of prominent individuals, including national poet Sándor Petőfi, novelist Ferenc Móra, cosmonaut Béla Magyari, President Tamás Sulyok, and celebrated athletes such as wrestler László Réczi and track stars Csaba Szűcs and Gyula Zsivótzky. In modern media, the city also earns a brief reference in the video game Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.

Travelers can easily access Kiskunfélegyháza through well-established transport networks. It is connected by the M5 motorway and Highways 5 and 451. Additionally, the city serves as a regional rail hub along the major line connecting Budapest, Cegléd, and Szeged, with further railway connections extending to Szolnok, Kiskunhalas, and Szentes.
