When exploring Tartu, Estonia, you will find Kuradisild, also known as The Devil's Bridge. Perched on Toomemägi hill, this dark concrete footbridge is a protected heritage site and one of the town's iconic landmarks. Originally constructed in 1913 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty, it stands as one of the few remaining concrete bridges built in the early 20th century. Earlier wooden structures occupied this spot dating back to 1809, but today's single-span bridge was designed by city architect Arved Eichhorn.
As you walk across this historic structure, you will see unique architectural details. Supported by two arches, its massive parapet features ornamental panels alongside seating recesses. Look at the uphill side to spot the commemorative dates 1613 and 1913. On the downhill side, take in the bronze relief of Emperor Alexander I of Russia crafted by Constanze von Wetter-Rosenthal, accompanied by his Latin inscription, Alexandro Primo.
