Why Kuwait City

Kuwait City is the capital, commercial heart, and largest urban area in Kuwait. Situated along the southern shoreline of Kuwait Bay on the Persian Gulf, the city functions as the country's political and economic core, hosting major corporate headquarters and the nation's banking system. The expansive metropolitan area spans all six of the country's governorates and houses more than 70 percent of Kuwait's population, surrounding a historic core located in the Capital Governorate.

First established as a small fishing village in the early eighteenth century, the settlement gradually developed into a prominent maritime trading post linking India, Persia, Arabia, and the Levant. Kuwaiti shipbuilders and sailors gained a widespread regional reputation, carrying trade across the Indian Ocean throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The discovery of oil in 1937 prompted extensive public works and modernization programs, transforming the city into a modern metropolis.

Visitors to the city can explore an array of cultural venues and historic sites. Major points of interest include the Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Cultural Centre, the Kuwait National Museum, Al Salam Palace, and Sadu House. Additional facilities include the Museum of Modern Art, the Maritime Museum, the Al Sabah Collection, and the museums situated within Al Shaheed Park. Architectural landmarks in the city include the Kuwait National Assembly Building, which features design elements derived from traditional Islamic architecture.

Kuwait City has a long-standing tradition in the performing arts, maintaining an active Arabic theatrical movement that dates back to the 1920s, as well as a prominent television production sector. The city is also home to the sports club Al Kuwait SC and hosted the Aquabike World Championship Grand Prix in 2020. Transportation to and from the area is handled by Kuwait International Airport, as well as two primary maritime centers, Shuwaikh Port and Ahmadi Port.

The city features a hot desert climate with exceptionally hot, extended summers and brief, mild winters. Summer high temperatures routinely exceed 45 °C (113 °F) and can rise above 50 °C (122 °F) during heatwaves, accompanied by occasional sandstorms driven by summer shamal winds. During the winter season, cooler weather prevails, with nighttime temperatures regularly falling below 8 °C (46 °F).
