Why Lincoln
Lincoln is a cathedral city and the county town of Lincolnshire, serving as the largest settlement in the county. Situated along the River Witham where it widens into the Brayford Pool, the city lies at the northern end of the ancient Fosse Way route. Its topography is defined by a prominent hill rising above the river, creating a clear division between the hilltop area and the lower town.
The city's history extends back to a 1st-century BCE Iron Age settlement of round wooden dwellings along the Brayford Pool. Roman forces conquered the area in 48 CE, constructing a hilltop fortress that was later expanded into Lindum Colonia, a settlement for retired soldiers. Following periods of Anglo-Saxon and Danish occupation—during which the town became a major trading center within the Danelaw—William I ordered the construction of Lincoln Castle in 1068 over the former Roman site.
By the 12th century, Lincoln had become one of England's wealthiest urban centers, built on a prosperous trade in wool and dyed textiles known as Lincoln cloth. This economic success was reflected in its monumental architecture, dominated by Lincoln Cathedral, an English Gothic structure that held the title of the world's tallest building for more than two centuries. The historic district stretching from Bailgate down Steep Hill to the High Street features half-timbered structures on High Bridge, the 12th-century Jew's House and House of Aaron, the Stonebow gate housing the civic Guildhall, and ancient churches including St Mary le Wigford, St Peter at Gowts, and St Mary Magdalene.
After experiencing decline following the dissolution of the monasteries and suffering structural damage during the English Civil War, Lincoln's economic fortunes revived during the Georgian and Industrial eras. The reopening of the Foss Dyke canal and the arrival of railways spurred a thriving heavy engineering industry. Notably, the world's first military tanks were designed and manufactured in the city by William Foster & Co. during the First World War.
Today, Lincoln functions as an educational and regional hub. It is home to the University of Lincoln and Lincoln Bishop University, as well as the football clubs Lincoln City F.C. and Lincoln United F.C. Local heritage and industrial history are preserved in places such as the Museum of Lincolnshire Life, located inside the city's 1857 Old Barracks.
