Why Lomé
Lomé serves as the capital, chief seaport, and primary administrative and industrial hub of Togo. Situated along the Gulf of Guinea in the country's southwestern corner, the urban area sits directly beside Togo's western border with Ghana. The city's name originates from the Ewe word Alomé, which translates to within the alo trees, referencing a forest that once occupied the area. Today, the municipality covers 333 square kilometers, a territory that includes 30 square kilometers of lagoon environments.
As Togo's economic heart, Lomé contains an oil refinery and operates as the country's central maritime gateway, shipping key agricultural exports such as coffee, cocoa, copra, and oil palm kernels. The urban landscape is notably heterogeneous, featuring opulent villas positioned alongside modest residential housing without strict spatial partitioning between social classes. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the south, the city spread outward between the sea, the northern lagoon, and neighboring districts. Its historic core, situated along the coast, is encircled by a ring road known as the Boulevard du 13 juillet and encompasses administrative and commercial neighborhoods.
The settlement was established by the Ewe people and experienced substantial growth during the late nineteenth century. Local merchants utilized the coastal location to bypass heavy British import taxes imposed in the neighboring Gold Coast. This commercial activity attracted European trading firms and inland merchant caravans, transforming Lomé into a bustling trade hub. In 1897, the German colonial administration transferred the capital of Togoland to Lomé. Early infrastructure projects followed, including the country's first major road to Kpalimé, a port, and railways linking the town to interior communities like Aného, Atakpamé, and Blitta. Later French administration further modernized urban services, introducing electrical power in 1926 and piped drinking water in 1940.
Despite its equatorial latitude, Lomé features a relatively dry tropical savanna climate due to its position within the Dahomey Gap. The city receives roughly 800 to 900 millimeters of rainfall per year spread across an average of 59 rainy days. Temperatures remain consistently warm throughout the year, with annual mean temperatures hovering around 26.9 °C. Coastal fog frequently affects the area as a result of the Benguela Current's northern extension, though the city still records approximately 2,330 hours of bright annual sunlight. Agricultural activities such as coastal market gardening operate along the sandy beach areas, where growers construct protective hedges to shield vegetable plots.
