Luokou Yellow River Railway Bridge

When you visit Jinan in Shandong, China, you can explore the Luokou Yellow River Railway Bridge, an early 20th-century railway bridge crossing the famous Yellow River. Conceived as a vital element for the Tianjin-Pukou Railway and built by German firm MAN between 1909 and 1912, this bridge represented a major engineering achievement that was unique in the region at the time. You will see an impressive structure measuring 1,255.2 meters long and 9.4 meters wide, supported by 11 pillars and 12 spans.

Placed where the river course is constrained by Que Hill to the north and a dam to the south, the bridge holds remarkable historical significance. During the first half of the 20th century, it was repeatedly damaged and repaired due to wartime conflicts, including explosions during the Northern Expedition, artillery fire in the Central Plains War, and severe damage in 1937. It even survived a major Yellow River flood in 1958.
