Why Madinat Al-Zahra

Madinat al-Zahra, also known as Medina Azahara, is a historical fortified palace-city situated on the western outskirts of Córdoba in modern Spain. Founded in the tenth century by Abd ar-Rahman III, the first caliph of Al-Andalus, the site served as the capital of the Caliphate of Córdoba and its primary seat of government. The complex was commissioned for political and ideological reasons, intended to project sovereign power, demonstrate superiority over rival Fatimid and Abbasid caliphates, and provide a magnificent setting suited to the ruler's elevated status.

Located roughly five kilometers from Córdoba, the original city covered 112 hectares on a sloped setting with views over the valley. Water was supplied to the settlement via aqueducts. Within its fortified walls, the urban layout contained audience halls, government offices, residential quarters for elites, military barracks, a mint, production workshops, and public baths, alongside a main congregational mosque and smaller neighborhood places of worship. Lower sections of the city accommodated commercial markets and living areas for common workers.

Construction began between 936 and 940 and progressed in phases across the reigns of Abd ar-Rahman III and his successor, Al-Hakam II. Builders incorporated thousands of antique marble columns imported from regions such as Ifriqiya, as well as ancient Roman statues and carved sarcophagi. Major additions during the 950s included large basilical structures and grand reception areas, such as the decorated Salón Rico, built to host elaborate court protocols and foreign delegations. Following the death of Al-Hakam II, government functions shifted when the leader Ibn Abi Amir al-Mansur established a separate capital around 978–979. Madinat al-Zahra was plundered during a civil war between 1010 and 1013, leading to its abandonment and the reuse of its building materials elsewhere.

Archaeological excavations at the site began in 1911. Approximately 10 hectares of the original city have been uncovered and partially restored, focusing primarily on the central palace complex. Visitors can view the remaining foundations, ceremonial halls, and terraced layouts that once formed the caliphal center. An archaeological museum dedicated to the site opened on the edge of the complex in 2009. In 2018, the site was officially recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the designation Caliphate City of Medina Azahara.
