Märcani Mosque

Located along the bank of Lake Qaban in Kazan's historical Old Tatar Quarter, the Märcani Mosque stands as a historic symbol of resilience. Constructed between 1766 and 1770 through local donations and the authority of Catherine the Great, it holds the distinction of being the first mosque built in Kazan under Russian rule following decades of persecution against local Muslims. As the oldest active mosque in Tatarstan, it also earned a unique place in history as the single mosque in Kazan that managed to evade closure throughout the Soviet era.

When you visit, you will experience a structure that represents a classic Tatar mosque design, famously blending traditions of medieval Tatar architecture with provincial baroque elements believed to be designed by architect Vasily Kaftyrev. Inside, you can explore its two-storied layout containing two distinct halls styled in The Petersburg Baroque aesthetic. As you admire the exterior and interior details, look for historical additions funded by 19th-century patrons, including an expanded mihrab, extended window breaches, added staircases, and a minaret featuring an ornate tracery balcony.

Named after the scholar Şihabetdin Märcani who served as its mid-19th-century imam, it offers an incredible, authentic look into Tatarstan's cultural heritage.
