Maribor Synagogue 🇸🇮

Located in what was once the center of Maribor's medieval ghetto on Židovska ulica ("Jewish Street"), the Maribor Synagogue is one of the oldest preserved synagogues in Europe and one of just two remaining in Slovenia. Established in the 14th century, this former Orthodox Jewish congregation worshiped in the Ashkenazi rite and once stood as the center of a prominent Jewish community in the Eastern Alps area.

Over the centuries, the building evolved dramatically: after the 1497 expulsion of the local Jewish community, it was converted into the Catholic Church of All Saints in 1501, later used as a military warehouse in 1785, and eventually repurposed for private uses ranging from a wine cellar to an art studio. Today, following renovations that reconstructed its late Gothic sanctuary, the site operates as a museum and cultural-exhibition venue known as the Center of Jewish Cultural Heritage Synagogue Maribor.
