Marrakech is a feast for the senses — the Red City of souks, palaces and gardens at the edge of the desert. It can dazzle and disorient a first-timer in equal measure, so give your days to the five sights that show its range, from labyrinthine market to serene garden.

The beating heart is Jemaa el-Fnaa, the great square that comes alive after dark with food stalls, musicians and storytellers — overwhelming, unforgettable and free to plunge into. From it spread the Medina Souks, a maze of covered alleys selling lanterns, leather, spices and rugs; getting pleasantly lost is the whole experience, so haggle gently and enjoy it.

For beauty and calm, tour the Bahia Palace, a nineteenth-century masterpiece of tiled courtyards and painted ceilings, and the restored Ben Youssef Madrasa, once North Africa’s largest Islamic college and a jewel of carved cedar and zellige tilework. Then escape the bustle at the Jardin Majorelle & YSL, the cobalt-blue garden Yves Saint Laurent saved — a cool, exotic retreat that is one of the city’s most photographed spots (book ahead to skip the line).

Between the sights, sink into Marrakech’s rhythm: mint tea on a rooftop, a hammam, a slow tagine as the call to prayer drifts over the rooftops. The medina is walkable but bewildering — embrace the wrong turns. Each guide below has tickets, the honest verdict and how to time your visit, so you can turn these five into a first trip that balances the sensory rush with moments of calm.

A practical note: the medina is a glorious labyrinth where getting lost is guaranteed, so save your riad’s location offline, agree taxi fares before you set off, and expect to haggle warmly in the souks — it is part of the fun, not a fight. Dress modestly out of respect, carry small change, and plan sightseeing around the heat, with the square and gardens for the cooler mornings and evenings. A rooftop terrace is the perfect place to regroup over mint tea.
