Standing as one of the tallest and most visible landmarks in Luanda, Angola, the Mausoleum of António Agostinho Neto (MAAN) is a striking 18-hectare memorial campus located on the Praia do Bispo. Built to honor Angola's first president, the site's most eye-catching feature is a 120-meter tall concrete spire designed in a brutalist constructivist style. Nicknamed "Foguetão" ("Space Rocket"), the spire references Neto's poem Pathway to the Stars and prominently features the machete-cogwheel-and-star emblem of the Angolan flag.
At the base of the spire, a pyramid houses the sarcophagus and embalmed remains of Neto, alongside the remains of his successor, José Eduardo dos Santos. As you approach the main entrance, you will discover a rich gallery of bronze artworks, including twelve neo-socialist realist sculptures, forty-eight plates featuring eulogies and speech quotations, and an engraving of Neto's signature flanked by his famous poems.
