Why Menemen
Menemen is a district and municipality situated in the İzmir Province of western Turkey, covering an area of 573 square kilometers along a fertile plain shaped by the alluvial deposits of the Gediz River. Located 35 kilometers from Konak Square in central İzmir, the district features a 27-kilometer western coastline. It is bordered by Foça and Aliağa to the north, Manisa Province to the east, and Çiğli, Karşıyaka, and Bornova to the south. While the southern portion forms part of the loosely scattered Greater İzmir Metropolitan Area, the northern section consists of isolated villages dispersed across prairies.
The region boasts a long history of human settlement dating back to the late Neolithic and early Chalcolithic periods, with notable archaeological sites at Panaztepe, Araptepe, Larissa, and Yahşelli. Ancient Panaztepe reveals Mycenaean influences through its tholos tombs, while the early settlement near Yahşelli marked the historic boundary between Ionia and Aeolia. Over the centuries, control of the region passed among Phrygians, Lydians, Persians, Alexander's Empire, the Pergamon Kingdom, Romans, and Byzantines. In 1313, the Beylik of Saruhan established local rule, referring to the locality as Tarhaniyat, before it was incorporated into the Ottoman Empire during the fifteenth century. By the late eighteenth century, Menemen had grown into a prominent center for cotton textile production.
In the twentieth century, the district experienced significant events, including the Greco-Turkish War, the 1923–1924 population exchange, and the 1930 Menemen Incident, which led to the creation of a landmark memorial on Hıdırtepe dedicated to Lieutenant Mustafa Fehmi Kubilay. Today, the local economy relies heavily on agriculture, stock breeding, and long-standing craft traditions. Menemen has been nationally famous for centuries for its earthenware pottery and ceramics. Industrial activities include leather processing, plastic manufacturing, and exports of agricultural goods such as yogurt, pickled items, raisins, and dried tomatoes.
Visitors exploring the old town quarter can see historic architecture concentrated around the Taşhan, a restored stone caravanserai believed to date from the late sixteenth or early seventeenth century. Nearby structures include a covered bazaar, two historic mosques, Ottoman shrines, older residential homes, the remains of an abandoned synagogue, and the restored Agios Konstantinos Greek Church. On the summit of Hıdırtepe, set among single-story homes with gardens, stands an Ottoman shrine alongside the military-managed Kubilay memorial area and its high statue. The district is accessible via the E87 roadway and the local railway station, which provides daily passenger service.
