Why Mitú
Mitú is a small town and the administrative capital of the Vaupés Department, situated in the Amazon Basin region of southeastern Colombia. Sitting at an elevation of 180 meters above sea level along the banks of the Vaupés River, it functions as the principal commercial and service hub for the surrounding region. Due to the complete absence of overland road networks connecting it to the rest of the country, Mitú holds the distinction of being Colombia's most isolated capital, accessible exclusively by river or air.
The origins of the settlement stem from early twentieth-century competition between Colombian and Brazilian operators extracting natural rubber along the upper stretches of the Apaporis and Guainía rivers. By 1903, rubber harvesting in the region relied heavily on the forced labor of local indigenous groups, specifically the Tucano and Carijona communities. In October 1936, Miguel Cuervo Araoz formally established Mitú as a modest hamlet. It developed into a gathering place for native populations, missionaries, and fur traders, serving as a center where rubber was exchanged for essential goods such as fuel, clothing, and food.
Over the decades, Mitú underwent several administrative transitions, becoming the capital of the Vaupés Commissary in 1963, a municipality in 1974, and the departmental capital in 1991. The town suffered major damage in November 1998 during a siege by an estimated 1,500 FARC guerrilla members against local police and army forces. The battle resulted in heavy casualties, the destruction of a communications tower, temporary seizure of the airport, and the taking of military hostages who were later freed during rescue operations in 2010.
The primary transit link to the municipality is the Fabio Alberto León Bentley Airport, which features an asphalt runway long enough to accommodate military transports and medium-sized passenger jets. Running parallel to the Vaupés River across the town, the airport facilitates vital movement of goods and people. For local transportation, the Vaupés River serves as the main physical corridor connecting Mitú to nearby riverside hamlets.
Mitú experiences a tropical rainforest climate, categorized as Köppen Af. Situated in the equatorial Amazon region, the town encounters hot, humid, and wet weather conditions continuously throughout the entire year.
