Located in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, right near the Mexico–United States border and El Paso, Texas, the Monumento a la Mexicanidad—popularly known as La X or La Equis—is a striking outdoor steel artwork worth experiencing. Designed by famed Mexican sculptor Enrique "Sebastián" Carbajal and inaugurated on May 24, 2013, this massive installation stands 64 meters (210 feet) tall and weighs approximately 800 metric tons. When you visit, you will marvel at its bold red structure shaped like a giant letter "X".

The monument is rich with symbols associated with Mexican identity, specifically representing the historic mestizaje process in Mexico. Take a close look at the top of the sculpture: one of its upper ends was intentionally left incomplete by Sebastián to symbolize the continuous, never-ending task of improving both Ciudad Juárez and Mexico. As you explore the monument, look toward the middle section to find an observation deck that takes the distinct shape of an eye when viewed from the outside.

Having undergone restoration works in 2020 and 2024, this impressive border monument provides a deeply meaningful visual highlight during your travels near El Paso.
