Located along the scenic Haohe River at 19 Qixiu Road in Chongchuan District, Nantong Museum offers US travelers a unique look into one of China's oldest museums. Established in 1905 by renowned educator Zhang Jian, this local comprehensive museum seamlessly doubles as a unique park. Divided into five distinct parts—center, south, north, east, and west—the complex features fascinating architecture that ranges from traditional Chinese two-floor houses to western-style buildings.
As you stroll through the yard, you will encounter lush trees, flowers, ponds, pavilions, and roaming birds and animals. Inside, you can explore around 50,000 objects bridging natural science and history. Highlights include Neolithic cultural finds, local historical relics spanning ancient times to the present, and pictures of supernatural beings inside the reconstructed 'old elephant pavilion.' Meanwhile, the natural exhibit displays include specimens from Nantong, China, and around the world, anchored by a famous whale framework display.
Beyond the exhibits, the complex includes miniature garden rooms and tea houses added fifty years after its opening.
