The octagonal design is said to have been inspired by the Old Powder Magazine in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Founded in 1837 through the merging of a reading society and the Bahamas Society for the Diffusion of Knowledge, it officially became a public library in 1847, placing it among the oldest public libraries in the Commonwealth Caribbean. The structure was fully converted into a library in 1873.
