Located in Malaysia's federal capital of Kuala Lumpur near the Malaysian Houses of Parliament, Tugu Negara (the National Monument) is a historic memorial park commemorating those who died in the nation's struggle for freedom. It primarily honors those who fought against the World War II Japanese occupation and during the Malayan Emergency from 1948 to 1960.
Inspired by the Marine Corps War Memorial after a visit to the United States by Malaysia's first prime minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, the centerpiece was designed by renowned sculptor Felix de Weldon and unveiled in 1966. When you visit, you will witness the world's tallest bronze freestanding sculpture grouping—standing 15 meters (49.21 feet) tall on Swedish granite stones—depicting seven figures that symbolize leadership, suffering, unity, vigilance, strength, courage, and sacrifice.
Within the memorial complex, you can also see the historic interwar-era cenotaph, which was originally erected near the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station to honor the Great War before being moved to the park in 1964 with inscriptions dedicated to fallen heroes.
