National Museum of Egyptian Civilization 🇪🇬

The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization is a major cultural institution situated in the Old Cairo district of Cairo, Egypt. Set alongside Ain el-Sera Lake, the surrounding grounds were transformed into a visitor site in 2022, featuring landscaped green areas, wooden pergolas, fountains, dining options, an open-air theater, and a dedicated lake water purification facility.

Initially opening its doors in part during 2017, the museum celebrated its official inauguration on April 3, 2021. This opening was highlighted by the Pharaohs' Golden Parade, a historic procession that relocated 22 royal mummies from the Egyptian Museum in central Cairo. Supported by technical assistance from UNESCO, the institution preserves and displays approximately 50,000 artifacts detailing Egyptian history from prehistoric times to the modern era. Its vast holdings draw from several prominent Egyptian institutions, including the Coptic Museum, the Museum of Islamic Art, the Manial Palace and Museum, Alexandria's Royal Jewelry Museum, and a donation of 5,000 items from the American University in Cairo.

The permanent collection is organized into both chronological and thematic divisions. Chronological periods cover the Archaic, Pharaonic, Greco-Roman, Coptic, Medieval, Islamic, modern, and contemporary eras, while thematic sections explore topics such as the Nile, writing, beliefs, and society. Within the main gallery, exhibits offer a comprehensive overview of Egyptian cultural progress and heritage. Key highlights displayed in this area include the Nazlet Khater Skeleton, the Tent of Purification, the coffin of Sennedjem, the Nilos Statue, the Al Falaha Statue, and the Minbar of Aboubakr Ibn Mizhar.

Specialized exhibition spaces further enrich the venue. The Royal Mummies' Hall is designed to mirror the atmosphere of the Valley of the Kings and houses 20 royal mummies—comprising 18 kings and two queens from the 17th through 20th dynasties. The Egyptian Textile Gallery exhibits nearly 600 textile artifacts. Additionally, the site encompasses an ancient dye house dating back to at least the first century of the Fatimid period, standing as the only remaining historical structure of its kind in Cairo.

In addition to its exhibition halls, the complex houses an on-site Conservation Center and storage facilities, and it previously hosted the final draw for the 2021 World Men's Handball Championship. Visitor accessibility is supported through elevators, designated parking spots, and complimentary wheelchairs. Travelers with specific accessibility needs can request Braille brochures or arrange sign-language tours in advance. Entry tickets for international visitors are priced at 550 EGP (11 USD) for adults and 300 EGP (6 USD) for students.
