Why Nelson
Positioned along the eastern shores of Tasman Bay at the northern tip of New Zealand's South Island, Nelson is a coastal city and unitary authority. Known informally as "Sunny Nelson" due to its high annual sun exposure, as well as the "Top of the South," the municipality covers a territorial area of 422 square kilometres. It is bordered by the Marlborough District to the east and the Tasman District to the south and west, housing an urban population of 50,800 residents.
Māori settlement in the region began approximately 700 years ago, with early iwi such as Waitaha quarrying local argillite and developing extensive garden complexes on the Waimea Plains. European settlement commenced in 1841 through the New Zealand Company under the command of Captain Arthur Wakefield. Officially declared a city by British royal charter in 1858, Nelson is the oldest city on the South Island and the second-oldest in the country. It was named after Admiral Horatio Nelson, a heritage reflected in many local street names, including its central commercial thoroughfare, Trafalgar Street.
Nelson is widely recognized for its vibrant culture, featuring a flourishing local arts and crafts community alongside popular public gatherings such as the Nelson Arts Festival. The layout of the central city is bounded by Halifax, Rutherford, Collingwood, and Selwyn Streets. A notable landmark near the center is the monument on Botanical Hill, reached via the "Centre of New Zealand" walk. Though not the country's true geographical midpoint, this hill marked the zero-coordinate origin for national geodetic surveys started in the 1870s, providing a 360-degree view of the surrounding territory.
The coastal geography of Nelson is centered around a sheltered natural harbour shielded by the Boulder Bank, a 13-kilometre natural rock formation created by longshore drift. Nearby water features include Fifeshire Rock, the sandy coast of Tāhunanui Beach, and four principal waterways: the Whangamoa, Wakapuaka, Maitai, and Roding Rivers. Historic landmarks also dot the city's heights, including a preserved 1858 time gun situated near the original 1841 flagpole site on Britannia Heights.
Nelson has a temperate oceanic climate with cool winters, warm summers, and rainfall distributed evenly throughout the year. Due to its marine setting, the area experiences fewer frosts than inland regions, while accumulating an annual average of more than 2,400 sunshine hours, making it one of the sunniest urban centers in New Zealand.
