When you visit Blois in the Loir-et-Cher department of France, the Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Trinité offers a remarkable journey into early 20th-century French Christian art. Dedicated to Our Lady of the Trinity, this Roman Catholic minor basilica grew out of a Marian devotion centered on the triple Ave Maria prayer, promoted initially by Capuchin brothers Father Jean-Baptiste and Father Clovis. Approved by Pope Benedict XV as an international center for this devotion, construction on the church began in 1932, resumed under architect Paul Rouvière in 1935, and culminated in its consecration in 1949.
Today, you can explore an architectural site recognized on France's historic monuments list alongside its cloister, galleries, and convent buildings. Inside, you will experience a strikingly uniform inter-war artistic style. Be sure to admire the fourteen large stained glass windows created by Louis Barillet, Jacques Le Chevallier, and Théodore-Gérard Hanssen, which depict the mysteries of Mary within the history of salvation.
Look up to see vivid vault and ceiling mosaics, including high altar designs and works by Marthe Flandrin, as well as an impressive Stations of the Cross frieze by sculptor Jean Lambert-Rucki running along both sides of the nave.
