Why Novosibirsk

Situated in southwestern Siberia along the West Siberian Plain, Novosibirsk serves as the administrative center of both Novosibirsk Oblast and the Siberian Federal District. Positioned along the banks of the Ob River, it ranks as Russia's third most populous city and the largest urban municipality in North Asia. The city's southern edge extends along the Ob Sea, an expansive water reservoir created by the dam of the Novosibirsk Hydroelectric Station.

The settlement was established in 1893 at the crossing point of the Trans-Siberian Railway bridge across the Ob River. Originally named Novonikolayevsk in honor of Emperor Nicholas II, the town rapidly grew into a central commercial and transport hub, a status enhanced by the later completion of the Turkestan–Siberia Railway. After being renamed Novosibirsk in 1926, the city developed into a primary industrial base, absorbing over 50 relocated factories and more than 140,000 refugees during World War II.

Novosibirsk's urban layout evolved around its major thoroughfare, Krasny Prospekt, and the area surrounding the prominent Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre. Visitors can explore key local landmarks such as the neo-Byzantine Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the Novosibirsk Zoo, and the Monument to the Heroes of the Revolution. The city spans both banks of the Ob River, with infrastructure connected by three road bridges, two rail bridges, a metro bridge, and an underground metro system that began operation in 1985.

About 30 kilometers south of the main city center sits Akademgorodok, a dedicated scientific research center founded during the 1950s. Although governed by Novosibirsk, this specialized academic community operates with its own infrastructure, housing the Siberian Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Novosibirsk State University, and more than 35 research institutions.

Novosibirsk has a humid continental climate characterized by warm summers and dry, freezing winters. Average summer temperatures range from 15 °C to 26 °C, reaching up to 35 °C, while winter averages range between −20 °C and −12 °C, with frequent light snowfalls driven by Arctic winds. The city is connected internationally and domestically through Tolmachevo Airport, the busiest aviation hub in Siberia.
