Why Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki

Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki, often called simply Nowy Dwór, is a town located in east-central Poland within the Masovian Voivodeship. Positioned in the northern portion of the Warsaw metropolitan area, it serves as the seat of Nowy Dwór County and recorded a population of roughly 28,500 in 2021. The name translates to "New Manor," reflecting the historic manor-style architecture found in the area. Geographically, the town is situated at the junction of the Narew and Vistula rivers, a location that enabled it to grow into a prosperous commercial hub.

Founded during the medieval era, Nowy Dwór was noted as a Masovian castle site in 1355. In 1374, Duke Siemowit III of the Piast dynasty granted the settlement Chełmno town rights. It later functioned as a private town under the ownership of the Lubomirski, Poniatowski, and Gutakowski noble families. In 1655, it was the site of the Battle of Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki during the Swedish invasion of Poland. Industrial expansion occurred during the late modern period, initiated in part by Stanisław Poniatowski, who set up a cloth factory in the town during the early Industrial Revolution.

Because of its strategic riverfront placement, the town became a major military site containing Modlin Fortress, one of the largest defensive structures in Poland. The village of Modlin was formally integrated into the expanding town in 1961 as a district. Present-day visitors to the Modlin area can see military ruins designed by Napoleon Bonaparte alongside Tsarist Blocks, which were erected between 1899 and 1901 to quarter Russian soldiers and now function as private residential apartments. Within the town, historical wooden architecture is also preserved, featuring houses and villas dating to the late 18th century.

During World War II, the town fell under German occupation in September 1939. A ghetto operated from 1941 to 1942 across Nałęcza, Warszawska, Mazowiecka, and Piaskowa streets, where disease and deportations to Auschwitz decimated the local Jewish population of over 9,000. In contemporary times, Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki serves as an important regional transportation hub housing the Warsaw Modlin Airport. It is also home to the Świt Nowy Dwór football team, which competed in Poland's top league during the 2003–2004 season.
