Why Özgön
Özgön, also recorded under the name Uzgen, is a city of district significance located within the Osh Region of Kyrgyzstan. Functioning as the administrative center for the surrounding Özgön District, the town recorded a population of 62,802 during the year 2021.
The settlement occupies a distinct geographic setting at the far eastern edge of the Ferghana Valley. It stands on the right bank of the Kara-Darya, positioned upstream from the point where the river enters the broader valley terrain. In relation to other regional cities, the town is situated 30 miles northeast of Osh and 20 miles southeast of Jalal-Abad.
Under the Köppen climate classification system, Özgön experiences a hot-summer Mediterranean continental climate. Summer months in the area are characteristically hot and dry. The majority of the area's annual precipitation occurs during the winter season and its adjacent months.
The town features a long recorded history, with early references appearing in Chinese annals from the second century BC. During medieval times, the site served as one of the capitals for the Karakhanids, who called it Mavarannahr. When the Kara-Khanid dynasty split into two separate branches, Özgön became the dwelling place of Muhammad b. Nasr. Accounts detailing the town were also written by tenth-century Arab authors, including Al-Muqaddasi and Ibn Hawqal.
Among the notable historic features preserved in the city are three mausolea remaining from the Karakhanid period. In terms of local heritage, the town is also the birthplace of astronaut Salizhan Sharipov, who was born in 1964, and one of the middle or high schools in Özgön is named in his honor.
