Step into the rich heritage of Porto Alegre with a visit to the Paço Municipal de Porto Alegre, also fondly known as the Old City Hall or Paço dos Açorianos. Inaugurated in 1901 after being designed by Venetian engineer Giovanni Colfosco, this historic architectural landmark in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul is a must-see for history and art lovers.
The building features an H-shaped general layout and an eclectic style derived from neoclassical patterns, infused with positivist guidelines. As you approach the exterior, you can admire classical Doric and Corinthian details, marble lions flanking the front stairs, shed windows, and intricate allegorical statuary representing values like Liberty, Democracy, Science, Commerce, and Industry.
Listed as a historic landmark in 1979, the building underwent extensive renovations in 2003 to host art exhibitions alongside the municipal art collection. In 2022, during the city's 250th anniversary celebrations, the venue was handed over to the Municipal Secretariat of Culture to be transformed into the Museum of Art of Porto Alegre, while still reserving the mayor's office and Noble Hall for executive use.
