Why Pattoki
Pattoki is an urban center located within the Kasur District in the Punjab province of Pakistan, where it functions as the administrative center for the surrounding tehsil. Known widely as the City of Flowers, the municipality earned this moniker due to its extensive cultivation and variety of floral produce. It sits within a historical area referred to as the Ganji Bar, a plain situated between the Ravi River and the historic bed of the Beas River, positioned at an altitude ranging from 190 to 200 meters above sea level.
The origin of the city's name is linked to the Patwan, a Hindu caste that resided in the area during its early history. The town underwent substantial development during the British colonial period when it became a major hub for cotton production. Following the establishment of a local train station during that era, the commercial market relocated to the northern side of the tracks, leaving the southern area to be designated as Purani Mandi, or the old market. After the 1947 partition of India, a significant number of immigrants settled in the locality, and agricultural production gradually transitioned over time from cotton to flowers.
Visitors to the area can observe a landscape defined by its agricultural legacy and academic infrastructure. The city hosts the Ravi Campus of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, which stands as one of the largest higher education institutions in Pakistan. Travelers can also explore the distinct commercial sectors created by the historic rail developments, including the traditional old market district.
In terms of transport and regional connectivity, Pattoki is a key stop along the rail line operating between the city of Lahore and the Okara District. It is situated directly along the N-5 National Highway, lying roughly 73 kilometers away from Lahore, the provincial capital. Its position along these major transit routes makes it accessible for travelers navigating the central region of Punjab.
