Why Poá
Poá is a compact municipality located within the metropolitan region of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Created by state law in 1948, it covers a modest territory composed mostly of urban terrain alongside a small rural sector. The town is widely recognized for its mineral water extracted from the Fonte Áurea, or Golden Fountain, which is distributed across the country. Officially designated as a hidromineral spa town under state law since 1970, the municipality receives dedicated state funding to develop regional tourism and carries the title in official records.
Despite its location in a densely populated region, the municipality intentionally maintains a quiet atmosphere. Local regulations discourage high-rise construction in the town center to preserve its narrow streets, historical architecture, and small-town charm. The region experiences a subtropical climate featuring mild winters and warm, rainy summers. Temperatures average around 18°C annually, shifting from a low monthly average of 14°C in July to a warm average of 22°C in February, with annual rainfall measuring approximately 1,400 millimeters.
Visitors to Poá can explore several civic landmarks, public squares, and cultural venues. Community spaces include the Public Library, a dedicated Cultural Center, and the Municipal Museum Taiguara House Station. Outdoor gathering spots such as Bible Square and Events Square offer recreational facilities, while a public skate park situated near the central viaduct hosts annual competitions. The town also upholds a long-standing Carnival tradition featuring energetic parades supported by multiple active local samba schools.
The city's main tourist highlight is EXPOÁ, the Exhibition of Orchids and Ornamental Plants of Poá. Established in 1970 to celebrate local orchid cultivation and promote nature, this gathering takes place every September at the Lucília Felippe Gomes Event Square and attracts approximately 300,000 visitors annually. Commercial activity and services are primarily concentrated along central avenues such as March 26 Street and July 9 Avenue, which serve as the main shopping corridors for residents and travelers.
