Porto Seguro is a coastal city situated in the far south of the state of Bahia, Brazil. Covering an area of 2,287 square kilometers, it serves as a prominent travel destination alongside neighboring municipalities like Santa Cruz Cabrália and Eunápolis. The region holds a central place in Brazilian history as the initial 1500 landing site for Portuguese navigators led by Pedro Álvares Cabral. The municipality is organized into five distinct districts: the central seat of Porto Seguro, Arraial d'Ajuda, Caraíva, Trancoso, and Vale Verde.

The region's climate remains warm and pleasant throughout the year, characterized by minimal seasonal variation. Temperatures typically range from annual lows of 19 °C to highs of 29 °C, seldom dropping below 18 °C or rising above 31 °C. The city is served by Porto Seguro Airport, which originally opened in 1982 and received major enhancements in 1997 and 2010 to handle larger commercial aircraft and connect the destination with major urban centers across Brazil.

Historic landmarks are concentrated within the elevated Cidade Alta district, a designated national heritage site containing three historical churches and approximately 40 restored structures. Notable locations include the late 18th-century Nossa Senhora da Penha Matrix Church and the ruins at Glória Hillock, associated with the early baroque São Francisco Church. The area protects native Brazil wood at the Pau-Brasil Ecological Station, preserves a river mouth via the Rio dos Frades Wildlife Refuge, and includes the marine ecosystems of the Corumbau Marine Extractive Reserve and the reef-rich waters of Recife de Fora Sea Park. Further inland, Monte Pascoal National Park safeguards the landmark hill originally sighted by early European explorers, protecting salt marshes, Pataxó territory, and habitat for threatened species such as the collared sloth.

In addition to trade, services, livestock, eucalyptus forestry, and cashew and coconut farming, tourism is a primary economic driver. Accommodation spans luxury resorts to hundreds of smaller hotels, catering to international guests from Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile as well as domestic travelers. Porto Seguro is also known for its lively Carnival festivities, where mobile sound stages called Electric Trios and street groups gather along the Passarela do Álcool thoroughfare and nearby beach venues.
