Primary Cathedral of Bogotá 🇨🇴

Located on the eastern side of Plaza de Bolívar in Bogotá's historic La Candelaria neighborhood, the Primary Cathedral of Bogotá—officially the Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica and Primate of Colombia—is a Neoclassical landmark and the seat of the Metropolitan Archbishop. Designed by Capuchin architect Friar Domingo de Petrés and finished in 1823, this National Monument stands on the site where three previous cathedrals stood since colonial times. Covering 5,300 square meters, the cathedral features a classic Latin cross plan with five naves, white vaulted ceilings adorned with central rosettes, and a dome decorated in indigo blue with thirteen tongues of fire.

Outside, the imposing façade displays Corinthian, Ionic, and Doric details alongside two 52-meter towers—the north tower holding a clock—and statues of Saint Peter, Saint Paul, and the Immaculate Conception. The historic 16th-century main entrance is adorned with Spanish cast bronze fittings, studs, and five bronze salamanders. Inside, you can explore sixteen distinct chapels, including the Baptistery with an 18th-century carved stone font and notable oil paintings.

Adjacent historical structures, including the Chapel del Sagrario and the 18th-century parish house, complete this central spiritual destination.
